Glossary of terms for replacement windows

Argon Gas: An odorless, colorless, tasteless, non–toxic gas used between a window’s glass panes to reduce temperature transfer.
Balance: The operating part hidden in the frame to assist in raising the window and holding it in a certain position when open.
Glass Pack: Two pieces of glass attached to a spacer in order to create an air chamber for the argon gas.
Low E (Emissivity) Glass: Glass with a transparent metallic oxide coating that reflects long–wave infrared energy, improving the U–Value.
Mainframe: The vinyl structure that encloses & supports the entire window system.
R–value: The resistance a material has to heat flow, wherein the higher the R–value is, the greater the resistance.
U–value: the amount of heat transferred through a material, wherein the lower the U–value is, the slower the rate of heat flow and the better the insulating quality.
Sash: The operable portion of the window that contains the glass pack.
Screen: The fiber mesh stretched across the window to prevent bugs from entering while the sash is up.

Other important factors to consider:

National Fenestration Ratings Council (NFRC) label: Look for this label on windows or patio doors to determine the U–Value, Solar Heat Gain & visible light transmittance values of a product.
